Who are we? … What do we do?
The CSMF is a not-for-profit industry group for Commonwealth and Australian Capital Territory government organisations, and interested organisations and individuals, which exists primarily to facilitate strategic advice to member agencies on Workplace Health & Safety (WH&S), Rehabilitation & return to work, premium management, and associated training and education.
Its other objectives include providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and experience; providing the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission (SRCC) and Comcare with input and advice on technical and policy/guideline development; and providing an industry view to government and the SRCC on legislative provisions and their impact on member agencies.
The CSMF membership comprises over 190 members in about 100 organisations from the Commonwealth and Territory governments, the Government Business Enterprise (GBE) arena, private sector organisations and individuals. Its mail distribution list includes personnel from across Australia. At its regular general meetings, held four times per year, members exchange information, and listen to guest speakers dealing with topical WH&S issues and includes opportunities for networking. As needed, representatives from Comcare provide updates to meetings on latest developments in prevention and rehabilitation.
The Forum has an active role in sharing policies, procedures, and guidelines to address common WH&S needs identified by member agencies and organisations. These documents are also occasionally developed through small working groups comprised of member agencies, and the outcomes are circulated widely to the membership for comment prior to adoption. Once you have become a member you are able to contact other members via the Online Forum in our Members Area of the website seeking information on topics of interest and access our Shared resources.
The Forum holds an Annual Conference which is a great value for money conference with dynamic speakers. Our Annual Conference is usually held on the last Friday in November each year in Canberra. In previous years the conference has been held at the Federal Golf Club at Red Hill in Canberra and have been a big success. Details regarding the booking process for the Annual Conference are circulated to all members separately prior to the conference.

Membership Categories
There are three (3) categories of membership within the CSMF:
- Agency Membership
- Associate Membership
- Additional Membership
Agency Membership is open to all Commonwealth and Australian Capital Territory government agencies and Government Business Enterprises that come within the jurisdiction of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988, (as amended), and any other agency/s that the Executive sees fit to nominate and are endorsed by the membership at a general meeting. This membership is at the Department level, and generally represented by staff with national and responsibilities.
Associate Membership is for those individuals, professional bodies, industry associations and organisations that are not eligible for Full Membership or Additional Membership.
Additional Membership exists to enable other staff members from a Government Agency or Associate Organisation (i.e. Professional Body, Industry Association or Private Sector Organisation) to participate in the CSMF activities and events, such as the regular meetings and conference.
The cost of this membership category is at a reduced rate and determined by the selection of the Fee Group (number of additional members required) detailed below in the CSMF Membership Categories and Fees Table.
Membership Fees
The fees associated with membership are due and payable on an annual basis. The schedule of fees at Table 1 below were adopted by members following an Executive Committee proposal at the CSMF Annual General Meeting of 26 September 2018.
Please note that the fee for Agency and most Associate Membership categories includes entry to the CSMF Annual Conference for 1 representative.
